
Stan worked in the 1930s for Robert Roebling, a direct
descendant of John Roebling, who developed the technology for
twisted wire rope and built the Brooklyn
Bridge in NYC. These were important years
for Stan, cruising in the Caribbean aboard the Roebling’s
beautiful schooner yacht Black Douglas. He must have learned many
shanties from the likes of Harding and Tobago during this period.
In 1992, Stan was planning to come to the US
again and his itinerary was to include, after
Mystic, a lecture for the Roeblings on this topic.
