Black Douglas
Black Douglas

Stan worked in the 1930s for Robert Roebling, a direct descendant of John Roebling, who developed the technology for twisted wire rope and built the Brooklyn Bridge in NYC. These were important years for Stan, cruising in the Caribbean aboard the Roebling’s beautiful schooner yacht Black Douglas. He must have learned many shanties from the likes of Harding and Tobago during this period. In 1992, Stan was planning to come to the US again and his itinerary was to include, after Mystic, a lecture for the Roeblings on this topic.

I knew Stan during my years at Mystic Seaport Museum (USA), during which I ran the Sea Music Festival of which Stan was an annual feature.

This picture shows Stan (second from right) among the Black Douglas' crew, circa 1931, looking quite dapper in his sailor togs. This photograph appeared in John Wright's excellent 2000 article on Hugill in Maritime Life and Traditions
