Greetings from Swansea.
I met Stan in 1978 at the first Pontardawe Folk Festival. He was appearing there
with Jim Mageean and Johnny Collins. I was working bar with the Swansea branch
of CAMRA and on the Sunday morning was having a break sitting in the marquee
listening to them Stan was doing his "tour" with a flipboard of charts and drawings
etc. I remember thinking "Who the hell is this guy?" I had heard the name of Stan
Hugill before but didn't know that this was the man. Later in the day I had great
pleasure in serving them with pints of Double Dragon. A photograph of the "Trinity"
in the beer tent is in the sleeve notes of Jim & Johnny's "Coming of Age" CD A couple
of years later, (1981 or 82?), again at Pontardawe Festival, for my sins I was put on late
arrival duty. So there was I all forlorn with a half gallon of Bass when, about half past
midnight in came Stan. I had never been so happy to see anyone, (he was my first, and
only, late arrival). He had a mug of Bass and we had a chat then he said it was time to
go and asked where was he staying. I gave him the address and he went. I looked at
the time, we had been talking for over an hour.

Great man.
